I first met Norman in the late 1980s when he was appointed as our pastor at Hilltop United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio. He was young and well-spoken and brought energy and enthusiasm to Hilltop UMC which was much needed at that time. His walk with Jesus and love for ministry was very apparent from the outset. I believe the real beneficiaries of his love for Christ were the children and teens who experienced Christ, many for the first time, through camps, spiritual retreats, and through life adventures such as rock climbing in the Smokey Mountains and white water rafting on the New River in West Virginia.
As I read through the pages of this book, I believe Norman has captured the excellence of his Christian journey which can become a model for us to follow on our individual walks with Christ. At ninety-six years of age, his words captivated me once again as I fondly remember the sermons he shared as a young preacher and teacher at Hilltop UMC. Norman’s words continue to be an encouragement to me to be more than what I am as I strive to walk daily with my Lord in the time I have remaining.
In John 10:10, Jesus says “I come that they might have life and have it abundantly.” Thanks be to God for His servant Norman and my dear friend who taught me to live an abundant life in Christ Jesus by his example.
